Why Self Care is Important

July 03, 2016

From a very young age, we're taught to love others- sharing our toys, giving complements, our pleases and thank yous. Whilst loving is others is one of the most important things in life, we often forget to love ourselves. Not in an arrogant way, but just giving ourselves a pat on the back for small achievements, giving ourselves time off when we need it, showing our bodies a bit of care. It's easy to make sure your friends, family, partner are doing well, but how about having a little check in with how you're feeling?
Maybe you do this already, but I just wanted to send a little reminder your way. Take a few minutes (or seconds if you don't have time) to check in, take a few deep breaths and see how you're feeling. There isn't a right or wrong answer. But maybe you feel happier than you realised, and feel grateful. Or maybe you feel a little lost, low or angry. Those are all fine too. I'll let you in on a secret:
That means you're human.
However, it's easy to get a bit overwhelmed at them all. And I want to remind you that it's not selfish to take time out for yourself.
Go on.
Here's some ideas too get you started:
Listen to your favourite album, or find a new one
Go for a walk, explore somewhere new
Have that extra slice of cake
Go to your favourite coffee shop for no reason
Immerse yourself in a book
Run yourself a hot bubble bath and light candles
Fill your room/studio/home with inspiring objects and photos
Nourish your body with plenty of natural foods
Don't forget to exercise! Try yoga or go for a cycle if you don't like the gym
Pick some flowers to press or arrange in a jam jar
Do some colouring
Write in a journal
Make yourself a warm mug of tea or lemon
Hope you all have a lovely day! What are your favourite ways look look after yourselves?

  1. Lovely lovely post, it's refreshing to see things like this as I feel we tend to ignore loving ourselves, we need to talk about it more!

  2. Such a sweet post! It's so easy to just think about what you're doing for other people, which is obviously important, but it's so much easier to be helpful when you're in a good mindset yourself. Exercise and good food always do it for me too - naughty food tastes good and is fun at the time, but never leaves you feeling great afterwrds!

    1. Thank you Lily Kate! I agree sometimes naughty food can make you feel worse after, have you tried banana ice cream? You freeze slices of banana and blend them to make ice cream- it's so tasty and it packed with goodness without the guilt! :)

  3. Great post, so many people push their own health to the side and forgot about little things to make their mental health better, even something as simple as a walk. I especially loved the "extra slice of cake" option!
