Bake Off: Yule Log Challenge!
December 20, 2014
So it's no surprise that I love making cakes. That's a well known fact. But Christmas cakes? Even better! You can imagine how happy I was when the theme for my college's monthly Bake-Off was the yule log technical challenge. After a little bit of searching online, I found this recipe from Sprinkle Bakes, following a simple vanilla sponge swiss roll recipe, then creating some really quirky details.
The mushrooms are a simple meringue mix piped into stems and circles, then joined together when cool with a bit of chocolate. I dusted them with a bit of cocoa after for the slightly 'muddy' effect to make them more realistic (I guess it's quite uncommon to want a cake to look muddy, right?). I also made a few little shelf mushrooms which I attached the the sides with butter cream.

To make the chocolate bark, simply melt plain chocolate and spread over greaseproof paper. Set in the fridge and then break into pieces- no need for perfectionism here! Cover the cake with butter icing and press on the chocolate pieces.
Finally, the cake was finished with some pine cones made from a ball of marzipan with slices of almond pressed into the sides. I mixed together a little cocoa and water and painted them to make them brown, and dusted them with drinking chocolate powder.
Hope that's given you some festive inspiration for baking over the coming weeks, I'd love to see if any of you have created anything delicious for Christmas!
